CREATING SACRED SPACE: Finding Inner Calm

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and out of control. Whether you’re traveling, working in a busy office, staying in a hotel, or living in shared accommodation, stress and anxiety can quickly take hold, leaving you feeling disconnected from your true self. It’s during these challenging times that it’s important to take a moment to ground ourselves, to connect and come back into alignment with ourselves and our spiritual being.

Creating sacred space is a healing practice that allows you to cultivate a sense of peace and harmony no matter where you are.  It involves creating an energetic space that links to a spiritual place within, allowing you to step away from the daily mundane into the present moment and a state of alignment.

This deeply personal practice is an outward expression of yourself through rituals, including song, poetry, affirmations, and carefully chosen sacred objects.

So how can you create your own sacred space? There are so many options and we invite you to tune in and get creative using some of the tools and tips in the guidance below.  

Choosing Your Spot

While a dedicated area in your home is ideal, remember that sacred space can be created anywhere you find yourself. The key is to choose a spot that is as quiet and peaceful as possible so you may feel calm and centered. 

Create Sacred Space At Home:

  • Find a quiet corner in your bedroom, living room, or even a hallway nook
  • Consider a window seat that offers a view of nature
  • Transform a small closet 
  • Use a section of your garden or balcony for an outdoor sanctuary

Create Sacred Space At Work:

  • Choose a corner of your desk or office
  • Find a quiet spot in a nearby park or courtyard
  • Transform an unused meeting room into a temporary retreat
  • Create a “virtual” sacred space by using noise-cancelling headphones and a calming screen background

Create Sacred Space While Traveling:

  • Set up a corner in your hotel room
  • Find a quiet spot in an airport lounge or train station
  • Use your car as a mobile sacred space 
  • Seek out local parks, gardens, or places of worship

Remember, the physical size of your sacred space doesn’t matter. What’s important is that it feels comfortable, safe, and conducive to inner reflection. When you can, make sure the area is relatively free from distractions and noise.  Try to choose a spot with natural light or a view of nature. Consider using a soft shawl, cushion, or blanket to create a sense of comfort and security.

Make It Yours

If you can, personalise your sacred space with objects that hold special meaning for you. This could be: 

  • A cherished crystal
  • A piece of jewellery
  • A photo of a loved one
  • A meaningful clothes item

This won’t always be possible if you’re away from home, but when you can, consider carrying an item that brings you a sense of joy, peace, or creativity that can be arranged around you in your space or held in your hand.

Also, consider what you might sit on and wear to ensure you are comfortable. A comfy coat if you’re out in nature or a special meditation cushion or favourite chair if you’re inside. 

Incorporate Sacred Rituals

Carving out moments for consistent self-care is a much-needed practice for our body, mind, and spirit in today’s busy world. We are constantly bombarded with content on our devices, so ‘switching off’ can be a practical practice, as well as a spiritual one.

Find a rhythm that works for you and let yourself be guided by how often you want to visit your sacred space. Some enjoy a daily practice upon waking, some before bed, while for others once a week feels regular enough. 

When stress arises, you can play some calming music to open your ritual. You can then set an intention to release something that no longer serves you or to manifest (or ‘call in’) a desire. You can write your own or use our Flower Attunement Cards to help guide you. 

Place a chosen Affirmation Card on your altar, write affirmations on post-it notes around your home, or include them in your journal or work diary.
