Iona’s friend and fellow Health Creation Mentor Jess Adshead recently wrote about getting “unstuck” which is fitting with our prosperity manifestation month! Here are some of Jess’s suggestions for welcoming change and new possibilities.
Why is it so hard to get “Unstuck”?
Why is it so hard to get unstuck — even when you know something in your life isn’t working? 😞 Why is it so hard to walk away from a dead-end relationship, even when deep down you know it’s over? Why is it so hard to leave a job that drains you, even though you dream about quitting every single day?
Why is it so hard to stop stress-eating, drinking too much, or binging Netflix every night — even when you know it’s keeping you stuck?
The Truth About Why We Stay Stuck
Here’s the truth: Your brain isn’t broken. It’s not “glitching” when this happens. In fact, it’s doing exactly what it’s wired to do.
The most primitive part of your brain — the part that’s been keeping humans alive for millennia — has just one job: to keep you safe.
Your brain doesn’t care about your happiness. It doesn’t care about your dreams, your growth, or living up to your full potential. What it does care about is safety — and to your brain, safety means stability and consistency.
That’s why your brain would rather keep you stuck in a job you hate — because at least it knows what tomorrow looks like. It would rather hold you in a relationship that’s going nowhere — because even if it’s not good, it’s predictable. It would rather you binge TV or eat comfort food — because even though you might feel worse after, at least those feelings are familiar.
Why Change Feels Unsafe
The problem is… change doesn’t feel safe to your brain. Change is the unknown. Change is unpredictable. And that triggers the part of your brain that’s designed to keep you stuck in the “safe” zone.
But here’s the thing: the life you want — the freedom, the joy, the growth — lives on the other side of change.
The Good News: You Can Work With Your Brain
The good news? You can work with your brain to get there. To create real, lasting change, you need to:
- Set the right kind of goals that don’t overwhelm your brain’s safety instincts.
- Teach your brain to think new thoughts — thoughts that support your vision for the future instead of holding you back.
- Start small. Take tiny, consistent steps that feel safe and manageable. Your brain is much more likely to adapt to a small change than a huge leap. Big changes trigger alarm bells — small changes get the job done without drama.
- Take small, consistent steps so your brain doesn’t panic and pull you back into old patterns.
- Focus on building habits that align with the future you want. When something becomes a habit, your brain doesn’t need to work as hard to resist.
- Embrace discomfort as part of the process. Growth often feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Your brain may resist, but discomfort is where change happens.
- Remember: Your current thoughts are creating the outcome you already have. If you want a different outcome, you need new thoughts.
- Interrupt old patterns. Next time you feel stuck, do one small thing differently. Break the routine, shake up the predictability, and show your brain that change isn’t as scary as it seems.
The Key to Lasting Change
The thoughts you’re thinking right now? They’re creating the reality you already have. If you want a different outcome, you have to teach your brain to think differently.
Your brain will always try to keep you stuck in the familiar. But change is possible when you learn how to outsmart that instinct — one small step at a time.
